Honorary Burro, Scampi

By Amy Pat Rigney | Administrator

July was a very difficult time for our herd. We said goodbye to both Ellie Mae and Claude. Both of these extraordinary burros were so special. That same month, we lost Rocky and Margie. These wonderful horses had resided with Scampi, their best friend, right next to our burros.

It was a hard time and we especially worried for Scampi, as she was left alone.

One of our volunteers suggested Scampi may do well in our senior burro group. Their diets were compatible and they had lived between fences for years. It was an interesting idea, should Scampi join the Burro Brigade?

As some of you may now, we have had two very special "honorary burros" over the years. Sultan, an American Saddlebred, was bonded with Ellie Mae and Jethro when they arrived to the ranch in 2009. Oh, how the time has flown! We are comforted to know that these three have reunited over the Rainbow Bridge.

Sonny, a handsome Belgian arrived to our sanctuary in 2016. He was part of a large seizure case with Animal Services. In order to give him as much space as possible, we began turning him out with the burros during the day soon after he arrived at the ranch. Pretty soon he was just one of the gang. It wasn’t long until he was living with the burros full-time. We were heartbroken to lose Sonny in 2024. We will always remember him as our big burro.

So, we tried scampi with the burros. We weren't sure how it would go. Scampi had been living with horses for so long, would she accept the burro way of life? Well, we are so happy to report that she has been very happy in our senior burro group. We are so glad that she has fund comfort in these new friends. She now resides with Felina, Fred, and Ethel.

We are so grateful for your support of our Burro Brigade. Thank you for providing our residents quality care and love until the end of their days. We are saddened to have said several goodbyes lately. But we are so happy that Scampi, Felina, Fred, Ethel, and the rest of the Brigade have each other. Thank you for making their safe-haven a reality.
