Fresh Clean Water in Embu, Kenya
Thank you once again for your continued support for this GlobalGiving project. It is one of the various ways we raise money for our Benevolent Fund, from which we are able to support deserving local, national and international causes.
Helped by the generosity of you, our GlobalGiving supporters, since our last report in June we have made the following donations from our Benevolent Fund:
- £1,230 for enhancement and repairs to some of the borewells we provided in Kenya. Some of the wells needed to be dug deeper to provide water during the dry season when the water table is lower. Also a couple of the pumps needed maintenance. This work will return all the borewells to a fully functional state and this is the final payment for this project.
- £1,368 for cleaning and repainting the ‘Billericay’ signs. In September 2021, following the winding-up of the Billericay Society due to lack of new members, the Club committed to take on the care and maintenance of the three ‘Billericay’ signs that were installed by the Billericay Society many years ago on the approach roads to Billericay from Shenfield, Chelmsford and Basildon. Since 2021 we have monitored the condition of these signs and this year the decision was taken to have them cleaned and repainted as necessary. We secured the services of Peter Thomas, the painter who used to do this work for the Billericay Society (and who therefore had all the right paint colours in his workshop). In August/September he refurbished each sign in turn. They are now all back in place, looking very smart again, and should be good for another 3-4 years.
- £200 donation to the RNLI. In September we had a lunchtime speaker from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and in response to this talk the Club agreed to make a £200 donation from our Benevolent Fund.
- £1,085 for Rotary’s ‘End Polio Now’ project. For several years the Club has held a summer Paella Party in a member’s garden and those attending have made donations towards Rotary’s ‘End Polio Now’ project. This year was no exception and we raised £1,085 for this project. This figure will be double-matched by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, giving a total of £3,255 which equates to roughly 32,000 vaccine doses.
Thank you once again for your continued support.

Donations Made Since Our March Report

KidsOut - Two at a time - twice the fun!
Thank you once again for your continued support for this GlobalGiving project. It is one of the various ways we raise money for our Benevolent Fund, from which we are able to support deserving local, national and international causes.
Helped by the generosity of you, our GlobalGiving supporters, since our last report in March we have made the following donations from our Benevolent Fund:
- £872 to help provide a computer suite for a school in Madagascar. This is a project created by the Rotary Club of Alba, Italy, one of six Rotary Clubs in our ‘Double Triangular’ friendship group. All six clubs have made donations to this project and together we have provided a computer suite, powered by solar panels, for a school in Vohimasina village, Madagascar.
- £1,482 to fund a KidsOut outing. We hired a coach to take 42 children from Thriftwood (a school for children with moderate learning difficulties) to Old MacDonalds Farm and Fun Park for an exciting day out. This was our Club’s contribution to National Rotary KidsOut Day. Last year over 20,000 disadvantaged children nationally were taken out by over 2,300 Rotary volunteers.
- £511 to sponsor Kenyan children through Secondary Education. This is a follow-on from our project providing borewells to schools in Kenya. We have agreed to sponsor three bright children from poor families through Secondary Education (which is not free in Kenya), enabling them eventually to get better paid jobs and thus help their families out of poverty. Without this support these children would have to leave school at the end of their primary education and be limited to poorly paid jobs. This donation funds the first year and we will repeat this for the remaining three years of their Secondary Education.
- £1,817 to the Rotary Foundation, This is our Club’s annual donation to Rotary’s own charity, which each year provides grants to Rotary-led projects all over the world. Since it was founded, more than 100 years ago, the Foundation has spent more than $4 billion on life-changing, sustainable projects. Each member of our club donates £6.50 per month which enables us to make a donation at the end of each year of $100 per member.
Thank you once again for your continued support.

Thank you for your continued support for this GlobalGiving project. It is one of the various ways we raise money for our Benevolent Fund, from which we are able to support deserving local, national and international charities.
Helped by the generosity of you, our GlobalGiving supporters, since our last report in November we have made the following donations from our Benevolent Fund:
- £300 to TEECH (Telecoms Eastern European Challenge), to help pay for the shipment of a donation of medical supplies urgently needed in Moldova. This was a follow-on from the delivery of clothing, toys and shoes that we reported in November.
- £7,340 to End Polio Now, Rotary’s project to rid the world of Polio. A significant portion of these funds were generated by our “END POLIO NOW Challenge 2023/24” microproject. See the report on this microproject for further information about Rotary’s fight against Polio.
- £70 to Colchester Zoo, following a talk given at one of our Club lunches. This explained how the approach of zoos has changed over the years, from initially displaying exotic animals for the entertainmaint of visitors, to the valuable work done by modern zoos in the fields of research and conservation.
Thank you once again for your continued support.
