INTRODUCTION
Agatha Amani House continues to support women affected by gender-based violence as they prepare for the next stage of their lives. The transition process begins while women are still at the shelter, through counselling, personal development activities and practical skills training.
During this period, women participated in activities designed to build confidence, identify their strengths and develop practical abilities that can support them after leaving the shelter. Skills activities include reusable pad production, farming and permaculture, beading, crotcheting, natural building, and other practical livelihood skills.
The reusable pad project has been particularly valuable in providing women with sewing and production skills while also supporting vulnerable girls in the community. During the last project, 805 reusable pads were distributed to girls in 12 schools, alongside menstrual hygiene education.
CHALLENGES
Transitioning from a safe shelter environment to independent living can be challenging for women who may have limited financial resources, employment opportunities or access to stable accommodation. Developing sustainable livelihoods also requires skills, materials, confidence, and continued support.
Skills production activities can also face challenges such as the cost of materials, equipment maintenance, and the need for continued training and practice.
SOLUTIONS
To address these challenges, Agatha Amani House continues to focus on practical skills that can potentially provide women with livelihood opportunities after leaving the shelter. Women are given opportunities to learn and practice skills while receiving guidance and support from staff and facilitators.
The shelter also uses women's classes and counselling sessions to strengthen confidence, communication, decision-making, personal boundaries, and other areas that are important when preparing independent living.
Where possible, transition planning focuses on helping each woman consider her strengths, practical skills, future goals and the steps required to move forward safely and independently.
LONG-TERM IMPACT
The long-term goal is to help women move from dependence on shelter support toward greater self-reliance and independence. The practical skills gained during their stay can provide a foundation for future income-generating activities and livelihood opportunities.
By combining psychosocial support with practical skills training and transition preparation, Agatha Amani House aims to ensure that women leave the shelter with greater confidence, useful skills and a clearer pathway for rebuilding their lives. Continued support is important in helping women make this transition safely and sustainably.
